Terje Haakonsen / Volcano Shred / Kamchatka, Russia

Terje creeps past a slumbering dragon in a remote corner of Siberia. The region of Kamchatka has only been open to outsiders since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991; for half a century before that, it was shrouded in mystery – even the handful of locals had to have military clearance to travel there, since its location on the Pacific rim made it ideal for eavesdropping on the United States. It is a land of pristine lakes, grizzly bears and over 200 volcanoes.
